Pedro Cruz-Avalos
City College of New York (CCNY) Student Writing For Engineering Portfolio
Reflection Essay
When writing an essay, report, proposal, and even a technical description; always think of the way of the future. An important thing to consider that I learned in this course of Writing for Engineering. Along with making my writing easier for the reader as to tailor to the audience and purpose. Which is the world that I as an engineer will have to face. That the skills learned in this course like use of scholarly sources, collaboration in groups, and experience with various technologies for well written engineering level projects.
Which began with the first but also very useful assignment of creating a proper resume and cover letter. Specifically one tailored to land an internship in my intended Major of Mechanical Engineering. This assignment strengthened my resume and cover letter to the proper formatting that employers seek. Using keywords that the company software would detect and increase the potential for an interview. That can be used throughout my college career for an actual internship in the future.
To continue, the following assignment was to write up a lab report. Through formulating a hypothesis that experimentally tests the probability of dice rolling. Throughout the report there was proper technical language but also making it easy for the reader to understand the purpose of the lab. Using two part titles, multiple sections, images accompanied with captions, synthesis, and cited scholarly sources. Which thoroughly explains the lab in a technical and grammatically proper manner to the audience. Achieving the high quality and still easily understandable by the average reader.
Additionally, the next assignment was to collaborate with a small group and respond to a request for proposal. That consisted of a need for a new student center for the City College of New York. The team name we had was The Three Engineers that created the proposed City Center. While the research for materials, costs and benefits were made to closely resemble the process if it were a real proposal. That was accompanied with a presentation for my peers to want this design for the new Student Center. Alongside strengthening collaboration in groups and presenting in the proper manner.
Then to the last major assignment that was the technical description and a presentation. Which consisted of an individually chosen topic to research, write, and present that closely relates to my major. Which was the 1968 Cadillac Eldorado; its history, key features, specifications, and FAQs. That as a Mechanical Engineer this was a great choice and had fit the proper requirements that were interesting, illustrative, researchable, and enough to write on a poster. That was presented to my peers in a short but informative presentation.
Finally, between these major assignments there were smaller ones that consisted of an introduction paragraph and Quest. Which initially the introduction paragraph is to introduce myself with my intended Major, interests, favorite hobbies, and the struggles in writing. Struggles that this course was able to improve through the assignments and teachings of writing. Which was also tested in the Quest (quiz/test) that showed my improvement in grammar and writing in the technical and proper way. Reflecting my start and end journey that I took in my writing.
Overall, each assignment in similar ways has taught me the skills necessary to write properly like an engineer and writer in general. Which needs the skills of citing scholarly sources, collaborating, reading, and use of technology overall is essential. All learned and demonstrated in the assignments of this course. Skills that will continue to be used throughout the course of my college career as a Mechanical Engineer. Where in the world everything is connected.
